INDUSTRIAL MARKING FOR DISC BRAKES

For all industries , in particular for the Automotive one, Industrial Marking is a mandatory process for  manufacturers and retailers, for ensuring traceability, control and quality for their products. For this reason, all international and local regulations require that every single Automotive component has to be marked in order to be tracked it from the production to the final destination, for warranty, safety and quality. A brake disc, for instance, is one of the most important component where quality and safety must be guaranteed.

According to the Regulation No. 90 of the Economic Commission for Europe of the United Nations (UN/ECE) every brake disc/drum approved in accordance with this Regulation shall be durably marked with at least the following information:

6.2.2.1. Manufacturer’s name or trade mark;
6.2.2.2. The approval number;
6.2.2.3. Part number;
6.2.2.4. An indication which provides traceability of the production process (e.g. date, batch number, source code);
6.2.2.5. The minimum thickness of the brake disc or the maximum permissible inside diameter of the brake drum.

So this is a EU law but also part of the United Nations World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP 29) . This last one offers a unique framework for globally harmonized regulations on vehicles. The benefits of such harmonized regulations are tangible in road safety, environmental protection and trade.

The main technologies for marking brake discs are:

  • Roll marking: cost effective, deep and fast marking on metal surfaces
  • Dot peen marking: deep, clear but noisy, it allows to mark both alphanumeric and readable datamatrix codes
  • Laser marking: clean, everlasting but very shallow on the surface, perfect for marking alphanumeric and 2D codes
