What is a Class 4 laser marking system?

Class 4 lasers deliver maximum power and flexibility for industrial integration: because the beam is fully accessible, they are designed to be safely housed within protective enclosures or custom automation lines tailored to your operational setup.

In the United States, three standards apply:

  • IEC 60825-1 defines the laser classes.
  • FDA/CDRH 21 CFR 1040.10 is the US performance standard for laser products.
  • ANSI Z136.1 covers safe use, including a Laser Safety Officer for Class 4 lasers.

Installed inside an interlocked enclosure, the whole machine can become a Class 1 system, safe for operators without eyewear. Automator Class 4 lasers add a CE-marked, dual-channel mechanical shutter that physically blocks the beam during any safety event, rated SIL3-PLe on second- and third-generation models.

Five Class 4 laser markers: find your ideal match

Automator's Class 4 laser range covers YVO4, green, fiber and MOPA sources from 5 W to 100 W, so you match the source to your material.
NANOVIS-III Class 4 laser marker

NANOVIS3

NANOVIS3 is the world's smallest marking laser: 9.7 kg, with source, galvo head, electronics and shutter in one modular box. It marks metals, plastics, glass, wood, ceramics and more.
VISII_02 Class 4 laser markers

VISII

VISII packs everything into one compact body, with three power levels and a standard 110 × 110 mm marking area. It's the usual starting point when you mark different materials on one line.
GREENVISII class 4 laser marker

GREENVISII

GREENVISII uses a 532 nm green source that plastics and electronic components absorb better: sharp codes with less heat on the part.
FYBRAII class 4 laser marker

FYBRAII

FYBRAII connects source and head with a flexible fiber cable and keeps the electronics isolated from dust, ideal for foundries, heavy machining and shot-blasted parts.
Mopa3 class 4 laser marking machine

MOPA3

MOPA3 is the most powerful: 100 W with tunable pulses for deep engraving, black annealing, color marks on steel and zero-roughness UDI codes.

Advanced Class 4 laser marking: what keeps every code traceable

An advanced Class 4 laser marking system generates serialized codes automatically, talks to your PLC, verifies every mark and works safely without stopping the line.

Key features that ensure precise, uninterrupted traceability include:

  • Automatic serialization - Data Matrix, QR and barcodes with serial numbers, dates and shift codes that update on every part (see how QR code laser engraving works on metal).
  • Mark-read-verify - Automator's S.W.Y.M. vision system reads each code, compares it with the reference, grades it and prevents double marking.
  • Line integration - remote interface protocol and up to 32 auxiliary axes for robots and PLCs.
  • Easy software - EuGENIUS™ is usable by operators without CAD training.

How to integrate a Class 4 laser without slowing your line

Integration takes four steps, and Automator's technicians follow you through each one:

  1. Test your parts to find the right source and power for your code and cycle time.
  2. Choose the lens: from 60 × 60 mm to 300 × 300 mm marking area.
  3. Guard the beam with an interlocked enclosure, or use one of Automator's Class 1 laser cabin machines.
  4. Connect and verify: link the laser to your PLC and add a reader after the marking station.

Who manufactures Class 4 laser marking systems

Class 4 laser markers come from laser source manufacturers, which mainly supply machine builders; integrators, which build custom cells; and marking specialists, which design the complete marker, software and support. Automator is a marking specialist and manufacturer, designing its lasers and software in Italy and serving US and Canadian customers from Chillicothe, Ohio.

In the US, medical devices must meet the FDA UDI rule and defense suppliers work to MIL-STD-130. For export to Europe, the laser follows IEC 60825-1 and EU machinery safety rules. Not sure which apply to you? Tell us your industry and market.
